MASTER of ARTS in TEACHING
Graduate
Catalog Entry
The Mathematics Department at Texas Christian University offers a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree program in mathematics. The MAT program prepares highly qualified teachers of mathematics at the secondary and two-year college levels. The program has been designed to provide a broad knowledge of mathematics and its history, to teach problem solving skills, and to expose students to the general philosophy of mathematics alongside specific techniques for teaching mathematics. The degree plan includes 24 hours of graduate mathematics courses together with 12 hours of graduate education courses.
TCU is proud to take a leadership role in response to the growing
demand for quality teachers of mathematics. The TCU Mathematics department
has always simultaneously emphasized teaching and research, and consequently
is uniquely qualified to ensure the success of the MAT program. In
particular, Professors Robert Doran and Rhonda Hatcher hold several
statewide and national awards for teaching of mathematics. Class sizes
will be small, and courses are scheduled in a flexible manner to accommodate
the needs of full-time teachers.
